WATCH: Alaska's "Talk Story Write Story" Experience

By CAK Staff

Contributor: Katie Paglini

In July of 2013, several senior high school students from rural parts of Alaska were invited to attend a college scholarship writing workshop as part of the Upward Bound Program in Fairbanks, AK. The workshop, entitled Talk Story Write Story, was led by Tad Bartimus Wariner and Dean Wariner of Hana, Hawaii, and partially funded by the Association of Alaska School Boards and Connect Alaska. Two teachers were also involved in the workshop, Megan Shaw from Bethel, and Jeanne Campbell from Chevak.

The goal was to give the students the support and the tools necessary to be successful when applying for college scholarships. Much of the training focused on writing essays, which are required in the scholarship applications, but there was also a focus on getting the students comfortable with technology and broadband. This video showcases what the students learned, and why this workshop was so important for their future.
